The best free AI SEO setup in 2026 is a small stack, not one tool. Use Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools for real data. Use ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini to turn that data into briefs and fixes. Add Screaming Frog for site crawls, and a free checker like Mangools AI Search Grader to see if AI tools mention your brand.

Most "free" SEO tools aren't fully free. Some are free forever, some have a free plan with caps, and some are trials that end after a few days. It's easy to build a workflow around a trial and lose it on day four.
There's a second problem. Many lists mix data tools with AI tools. Search Console tells you what Google actually sees. An AI chatbot only works with what you give it. You need both, and you need to know which is which.
I'm the Product & Growth Lead at Keytomic, an AI SEO automation platform. Our own free tool is in this list, and I've labeled it. I ran the tests below on keytomic.com on 15 October 2026, using free plans only.

How I tested these tools
I used keytomic.com as the test site and stuck to free plans. I judged each tool by its job, not by one overall score, because a crawler and a chatbot can't be compared fairly.
Hands-on tests: ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Mangools AI Search Grader, Google Trends and our own tracker. I also pulled three months of keytomic.com data from Search Console.
Same inputs: one Search Console export, the keyword "free ai seo tools", and Mangools' 30 auto-generated brand prompts.
Sign-in or desktop tools: for Bing Webmaster Tools, Claude, Ahrefs Free, Screaming Frog and Keyword Planner, I checked the free plan and signup flow on each official site.
What I noted: how fast I got something useful, the first limit I hit, and what needed fixing before use.
Four kinds of "free"
Free forever: the main job never needs a paid plan (Search Console, Trends).
Free plan: free, but with caps or rules (ChatGPT, Screaming Frog, Ahrefs Free).
Free trial: full access for a short time, then paid. Trials didn't make this list.
No-login tool: a one-job checker you run without an account (Mangools, SEO.ai).
Data tools vs. AI tools
Data tools report what really happens. AI tools explain and rewrite what you give them. My rule: never let AI invent your numbers. Give it real exports. This split is also the main difference between AI SEO tools and traditional SEO tools.

The 14 best free AI SEO tools
The list follows a normal workflow: data first, then AI, then visibility checks, then technical tools.
1. Google Search Console: best free data source
Free: forever · Best for: every site owner · Limit: Google data only

Search Console shows your clicks, impressions, click-through rate, rankings and indexing status. It isn't an AI tool, but every AI tool below works better when you feed it this data.
What I found: Over three months (12 July to 12 October 2026), keytomic.com had 61 queries ranking in positions 8 to 20 with 50+ impressions. The biggest was "robots.txt generator": 7,013 impressions at position 11.3, but only 22 clicks. "ahrefs vs ubersuggest" had 4,233 impressions and zero clicks. Those pages are where I'd start.

Watch out: AI Overview clicks are mixed into the normal report, so you can't see them on their own. Keytomic can also pull your Search Console data into one dashboard.
2. Bing Webmaster Tools: best free AI citation data
Free: forever · Best for: seeing AI citations from a search engine · Limit: Microsoft surfaces only

Bing gives you keyword research, a site scan and a second source of search data. The bigger reason to use it: Microsoft added an AI Performance report in February 2026. It shows how often Copilot and Bing's AI answers cite your pages. No other search engine gives you this for free. We explain the report in our Bing AI Performance guide.
What I found: Bing now promotes "SEO/GEO tools" right on its signup page, so AI search is clearly part of the product. You need a Microsoft sign-in and a verified site to see your own data.
Watch out: it counts citations, not clicks. Check GA4 referral traffic to see if those citations bring visitors.
3. ChatGPT Free: best free AI assistant for SEO
Free: free plan with caps · Best for: briefs, titles, analyzing exports · Limit: not a data source

OpenAI lists a $0 plan on its pricing page. ChatGPT is great for outlines, FAQs, meta descriptions and spotting patterns in a spreadsheet. Ask it for search volumes, though, and it will guess. Give it real exports instead.
What I found: Without logging in, I pasted 10 rows of our Search Console data with prompt 1 (below). In about 30 seconds it grouped them into six pages and wrote titles under 60 characters. Its math was right: 12,593 combined impressions for the two robots.txt queries. Its one miss was writing a "babylovegrowth" title as if the page belonged to BabyLoveGrowth, when ours is a comparison page. It did flag that one as unsure.
Watch out: free plan limits change often. To get cited by ChatGPT rather than just use it, see our ChatGPT SEO visibility guide.
4. Claude Free: best free AI for long documents
Free: free plan with caps · Best for: reviewing long pages and big exports · Limit: message limits

Claude handles long inputs well. That makes it useful for comparing your page with two or three top-ranking pages at once. The free plan includes web search, file creation and memory across chats. It's a good fit for content-gap checks and tightening drafts for E-E-A-T.
What I found: Claude needs a sign-in, even on the free plan. Once you're in, prompt 2 (below) works well for content gaps.
Watch out: like ChatGPT, it has no live SEO data. Check any fact it adds.
5. Google Gemini: best free AI for quick research
Free: free plan, works logged out · Best for: ideas and research · Limit: check every number

Gemini is fast for topic ideas and common questions. It's also worth asking about your own brand, since Gemini is one of the AI tools you want to show up in.
What I found: Logged out, I asked for the top 10 AI SEO automation platforms for agencies. Keytomic wasn't mentioned. Gemini listed Otto by Search Atlas, Alli AI, Semrush, Surfer, Indexable, BrightEdge, Frase, WordLift, AirOps and Conductor. It used one vendor's blog (Indexable) as the source for most of them. That shows how much one clear, well-structured page can shape an AI answer.
Watch out: ideas aren't demand. Check them in Search Console or Keyword Planner before you write.
6. Perplexity: best free AI for seeing which sources get cited
Free: free plan, works logged out · Best for: cited research · Limit: one answer is one snapshot

Perplexity shows its sources next to every answer. That makes it a free way to see which pages AI engines trust for your topic. It's a manual version of what LLM citation trackers do automatically.
What I found: I searched "best free AI SEO tools 2026". It suggested a stack (Search Console, Perplexity, ChatGPT, Claude, Ahrefs, Screaming Frog) and cited Stackmatix on almost every row. Its top 10 sources were Stackmatix (twice), SEO.com, Albato, Writesonic, RankAI, eesel (twice), Single Grain and Semrush. keytomic.com wasn't one of them.

Watch out: answers change with wording and over time. Check more than once.
7. Mangools AI Search Grader: best free AI visibility check
Free: no account needed · Best for: a quick AI visibility score vs. competitors · Limit: 3 AI models without login

Mangools AI Search Grader writes about 30 buyer-style prompts from your brand and niche. It then checks whether AI models mention you and ranks the brands that do. Without an account you get ChatGPT, Mistral and Llama results. DeepSeek, Claude and Gemini unlock with a free login.
What I found: I graded "Keytomic" for "AI SEO automation software". Our score was 0. Keytomic showed up in 0% of 30 prompts. The leaders were Semrush (78), Ahrefs (75) and Moz Pro (67). ChatGPT also described Keytomic as an e-commerce personalization tool, which is wrong. It took under a minute and was the most honest reality check in this list.
Watch out: it's a one-time score, not tracking over time.
8. Keytomic AI Visibility Tracker: best free AI readiness check (our tool)
Free: free to start; sign-in to see results · Best for: a first look at AI search readiness · Limit: a snapshot, not tracking

The free AI visibility tracker takes your URL and checks GEO readiness, ChatGPT visibility, LLM citations and AI Overview eligibility. Our free tools page also has a meta description generator, FAQ and Article schema generators, a broken link checker and a robots.txt validator.
What I found: I entered keytomic.com and clicked Check AI Visibility. The results open inside the Keytomic app, which asks you to sign in first. So it works more like a free entry point than a no-signup checker.
Watch out: it shows what's blocking you today. For week-by-week tracking you need a scheduled tool.
9. Ahrefs Free: best free site audit and backlink view
Free: for sites you own · Best for: auditing your own site · Limit: verified sites only

Ahrefs has renamed Ahrefs Webmaster Tools to Ahrefs Free. It gives you a site audit, backlink data and SEO metrics for sites you verify. Ahrefs' help center lists everything included, including web analytics that track visits from AI assistants.
What I found: You need to sign up and verify ownership before you see any data. It won't show you competitor sites.
Watch out: for competitor research you need a paid plan. See how it compares in our Ahrefs comparison.
10. Ahrefs AI Writing Tools: best free AI on-page copy helpers
Free: no plan needed · Best for: titles, meta descriptions, outlines · Limit: one task per tool

Ahrefs has a set of free AI writing tools: title, meta description and outline generators, a paraphraser and more. They're quick for small on-page jobs when you don't want to write a full prompt.
What I found: I entered this article's topic into the Meta Description Generator. Before it would generate, Cloudflare asked me to confirm I'm human. Expect that extra step.
Watch out: the output is generic until you edit it. Check length with a meta title and description length checker before you publish.
11. SEO.ai AI Keyword Tool: best free AI keyword brainstorming
Free: no login · Best for: early topic ideas · Limit: ideas, not search volumes

The SEO.ai AI Keyword Tool turns a short description of your business into a keyword list. It's most useful at the very start, before you know which phrases to check.
What I found: I pasted a two-sentence description of Keytomic. Clicking Generate brought up a reCAPTCHA each time, so it isn't quite one click.
Watch out: check the ideas in Keyword Planner or Search Console before you write. Our guide to keyword difficulty explains how to judge what you can rank for.
12. Screaming Frog SEO Spider: best free site crawler
Free: up to 500 URLs · Best for: small sites · Limit: desktop app

Screaming Frog crawls your site the way a search engine does. It finds broken links, redirects, missing titles, duplicate content and canonical problems.
What I found: The official page confirms the free version crawls 500 URLs. A licence costs €245 per year and removes the limit. It runs on Windows, macOS and Linux, so you install it rather than use it in a browser.
Watch out: saved crawls and JavaScript rendering need the paid licence. For more options, see our list of SEO audit tools.
13. Google Keyword Planner: best free search volume ranges
Free: with a Google Ads account · Best for: checking demand · Limit: ad-focused estimates

Keyword Planner gives keyword ideas and monthly volume ranges, with location filters.
What I found: The page now lives under Google Business tools and sends you into Google Ads to start. Setup can ask for billing details even if you never run an ad.
Watch out: the numbers are built for advertisers. Treat them as a demand signal, not a traffic forecast.
14. Google Trends: best free check for timing
Free: forever · Best for: deciding when to publish · Limit: relative interest, not search volume

Google Trends shows how interest in a topic rises and falls over time and by region. I use it to decide when to publish or refresh a post.
What I found: Over five years worldwide, "ai seo tools" stayed near zero until 2024. It then climbed to about a fifth of the interest in "seo tools", which also rose sharply from 2025. AI SEO is a growing part of a growing topic.
Watch out: a score of 100 means peak interest, not a search count.
Which free tools to use for each SEO job
For every job, pair one data tool, one AI tool and one human check. Here's what I combine, plus the prompts I use so the AI works with real data instead of guessing.
Keyword research
Start with Search Console for queries you already show up for. Use SEO.ai or ChatGPT for new ideas, Keyword Planner for volume ranges and Trends for timing. Bing Webmaster Tools works as a second data source.
Prompt 1: find keywords close to page 1 (ChatGPT or Claude)
Free tools won't replace a paid keyword database when you need competitor data at scale. Our list of SEO tools under $100 covers that next step.
Content optimization
ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini can outline, edit and structure drafts, as long as you give them real data. Google's guidance on AI-generated content says the page still has to be accurate and helpful, however it was made.
Prompt 2: find content gaps (Claude)
AI doesn't replace fact-checking, brand voice or a person approving what goes live.
Technical SEO
Use Search Console for indexing, Screaming Frog for crawls and Ahrefs Free if you can verify your site. Google's PageSpeed Insights and Rich Results Test add speed and structured data checks. Our page speed guide explains which speed issues actually matter.
Prompt 3: turn a crawl into a fix list (ChatGPT)
These tools find problems. Someone still has to fix them.
AI search visibility
A free checker answers one question: does AI mention me for this prompt today? Run Mangools for a baseline. Ask Perplexity and Gemini your key questions by hand. Check Bing's AI Performance report for real citation counts. Tracking many prompts over weeks is a different job, covered in our roundup of AI visibility tools.
Google says normal SEO best practices still apply to AI features like AI Overviews. No free tool can promise you a citation in ChatGPT, Perplexity or Gemini. If AI Overviews are your goal, start with our guide to getting into Google AI Overviews.
How to build a $0 AI SEO stack
Start with the smallest set of tools that fixes your biggest problem. Add a tool only when something breaks. Every free tool means copying data by hand into the next one, so keep the chain short.
Solo founder or small site
Set up Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools first. Then add one AI assistant with prompt 1, Screaming Frog if your site is under 500 URLs, and a free AI visibility check once a month. Your bottleneck will be time spent moving data between tabs. Upgrade when publishing slows down. Our SEO guide for founders covers what to automate first.
In-house marketing team
Add shared prompts, one agreed data source, a weekly export routine and an editing step. Decide early who owns Search Console and Bing access. Upgrade when building reports takes longer than acting on them. See how marketing teams handle that.
Agency pilot
Verify each client's site separately, keep client data apart in your AI tools, and use one report template. Free limits get painful when you re-crawl and re-export for many sites. In my experience, a free stack works for two or three clients, not a full roster. Here's how agencies scale past that.
When to move beyond free tools
Pay for a tool when a free limit keeps blocking work that brings in revenue. That's my rule of thumb, not a statistic.
The limits you'll hit first:
Site size: crawl caps like Screaming Frog's 500 URLs
Keyword depth: free tools give ideas, not full competitor data
Exports: copying and pasting between every tool
Multiple clients: verification, permissions and separate reports
AI visibility: free checks are one-time snapshots, not trends
Approvals: no shared review process
How Keytomic connects the workflow
Keytomic is an AI SEO automation platform that replaces those manual handoffs with one workflow. It runs AI keyword research using your Search Console data, plans a 30-day content calendar, writes drafts with internal links, publishes to your CMS and submits new URLs for indexing. It also tracks AI visibility in ChatGPT and Gemini on the Pro plan, plus Claude and Perplexity on the Agency plan. A person still approves what goes live.

When I checked in October 2026, the pricing page listed a 3-day trial and a Pro plan at $99 per month. Keytomic isn't the right fit if you need one quick audit, want to stay at $0 forever, or need a deep crawler or backlink database.
Frequently asked questions
What are the best free AI SEO tools in 2026?
In my tests: Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools for data, ChatGPT or Claude for analysis and drafts, Screaming Frog for crawls, and Mangools AI Search Grader for AI visibility.
Is there a truly free AI SEO tool?
Yes. Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools and Google Trends are free forever. Most AI assistants have a free plan with limits.
Are free SEO AI tools good enough to rank?
For a small site, yes. They cover data, writing help and technical checks. They fall short on competitor data, scale and ongoing AI visibility tracking.
Can free AI SEO tools replace Semrush or Ahrefs?
Not fully. Free tools lack competitor depth, bulk exports and multi-site features. See our Semrush alternatives if cost is the issue.
Can I use ChatGPT for SEO for free?
Yes, for briefs, analysis, titles and editing. Give it your Search Console data and have a person review everything before it goes live.
Can free tools track my visibility in ChatGPT or AI Overviews?
They give one-time snapshots. Bing's AI Performance report gives free citation counts for Copilot and Bing. Tracking many prompts over time needs a dedicated tool.
How many URLs can Screaming Frog crawl for free?
500 URLs per crawl.
What is the best free AI keyword research tool?
Search Console for queries you already rank for, SEO.ai or ChatGPT for new ideas, and Keyword Planner to confirm demand.
Pick your stack based on your biggest problem
Find the row that matches your slowest step and start there.
Your problem | Start with | Watch out for | Upgrade when |
|---|---|---|---|
Not sure what Google shows | Search Console | Google data only | You need AI citation data too |
Not sure if AI mentions you | Bing AI Performance + Mangools | Snapshots, few AI models | You need weekly tracking |
Briefs take too long | ChatGPT or Claude with prompt 1 | Free limits; needs review | Briefs pile up unpublished |
Small technical crawl | Screaming Frog | 500 URLs per crawl | Your site outgrows the cap |
Own-site audit and backlinks | Ahrefs Free | Verified sites only | You need competitor data |
Research to publishing to tracking | Not a deep crawler | Handoffs cost more than the plan |
Your first step this week
Verify Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools. Export your queries, run prompt 1 on them, and do one free AI visibility check. That's a realistic week of work, and it's exactly what free AI SEO tools do well.
